Madras in differing colors and patterns, cut into rectangles and sewn together one by one into a patchwork cloth, tailored here as a double-breasted jacket.

The cloth is Madras, woven in Chennai in southeastern India.
The name comes from the cloth the sailors of that coast wound around their heads.

Hand-spun, hand-woven Indian cotton goes back over 400 years, though it lost ground once to the industrial revolution and mass production in the 18th century.
It returned to view in 1920, when Brooks Brothers took up Indian Madras. Ivy Leaguers wore it from then on, and its place has not moved since.
Patchwork Madras sets those many patterns side by side within a single body panel.
Cloths differing in color and in the pitch of their checks run on in rectangles, and from a distance rise as one textile with depth to it.

The make is unconstructed.
Even so, the collar line that stands along the neck and the shoulder that falls naturally into the sleeve keep the dress elements a tailored jacket needs.

Against that, the cuffs are plain and open, the armholes generous, and all three pockets, chest and hips, are patch.
Details that support daily wear, placed with restraint.
D.C.WHITE tailoring puts refined air into casual cloth, and this is that idea in its most colorful form.
