"Newport Jacket" inherits a sense of taste in which the familiar and the new overlap across generations.

A piece popular since the Ivy boom of the 1960s, made up again through a contemporary eye.

Shell buttons, a restrained suppression at the waist, 4 buttons, a natural shoulder that follows the body softly: not quite a proper blazer, and easier for it.

From the 70s onward it appeared in a range of cloths.

Here it is put together in terry pile.

Double-breasted and pile: the rhythm of tension and release reads well.

The cloth is a 85% cotton, 15% polyester pile from SIDOGRAS, founded in Barcelona, Spain, in 1953.

Like a towel laid out at a resort, it is lighter and softer to the touch than ordinary pile, with a measured stretch.

The make, even so, is proper tailoring from a partner factory in Japan.

To keep it light enough to throw on, the facings are as narrow as possible and the sleeve lining is left out.

There is no chest pocket, the cuffs are plain, and there are no shoulder pads.

Against that, small darts at the waist shape the line, and a 3-piece cut with a side body panel keeps the silhouette following the body.

The back has center vents, and there are patch pockets at both hips.

A jacket to throw on like a cardigan.

From business days that call for a jacket in high summer to a relaxed resort look over shorts and a T-shirt, it changes face with whatever it meets.

The cut runs slightly compact, so consider going 1 size up from your usual.
